Finland Car Rental Common FAQ

How much does it cost to hire a car in Finland?

The cost of renting a vehicle in Finland depends on a lot of factors. This includes the company you choose, the time of year, and the type of vehicle you go for.

You can expect to pay anywhere between £25-£60 per day for a standard vehicle, while luxurious cars will cost more. We’d recommend checking out Discover Cars for the best deals!

What are the rules for renting a car in Finland?

To rent a car in Finland you have to be at least 20 years of age. Some car companies may require you to be older, while others will just limit the types of vehicles you can hire.

You need to have held your licence for at least a year and you may have to pay a young driver's surcharge if you’re under 25. In some cases, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Is driving easy in Finland?

Finland is a very safe and easy country to drive through, as the majority of roads are in excellent condition and most roads have little traffic (always a huge bonus).

Just be aware that you’ll be driving on the right-hand side, and will need to overtake on the left. In terms of hazards, keep an eye out for harsh weather conditions and reindeer on the road.

Can you rent a car in Finland and drive to Norway?

Many car rental companies will allow you to hire a car in Finland and drive to its neighbouring countries; Norway and Sweden. Some will allow you to travel through to other countries in Europe as well, such as Denmark and Germany.

Just make sure you check this in advance, as this will often incur an extra charge. If you do this without letting the company know when you book, your insurance may be invalid.

Other top tips for planning your Finland road trip

When it comes to driving around Finland, there are so many fantastic places to visit and experiences waiting for you. Whether you’re looking to explore national parks, learn about the local culture or spot wildlife, there’s something for everyone!

We spent 3 weeks road-tripping the country, starting from the country’s capital of Helsinki to the winter wonderland of Lapland. Along the way, we got to explore some jaw-dropping locations, as well as spot the gorgeous Northern Lights!

In terms of destinations in Finland, some stand out above the rest. Rovaniemi is certainly one of our favourites, as it’s the hometown of Santa Claus. Savonlinna is another incredible place to visit, found in the Saimaa Lake region.

When it comes to natural locations, don’t miss out on Urho Kekkonen National Park, Pallas-Yllästunturi, Oulanka National Park, and of course, Lake Saimaa.
