Is a Helicopter ride over Niagara falls worth it?

My Experience of a helicopter ride over Niagara falls 

We went with National Helicopters, and did their “Niagara Grand Tour”.

This was a 20 minute flight over Niagara Falls, and the stunning wine region. 

I will take a moment to note that if you haven't thought about going to the wine region in Niagara, called Niagara on the lake, then think again!

They have some excellent wineries and wine, and all-in-all it’s an absolutely beautiful area of the world. It’s also famous for its “ice wine”! 

Two wineries I can personally recommend are: Konzelmann Estate Winery and Peller Estates Winery And Restaurant.

This was a fantastic tour, and the view of the falls from above here is absolutely incredible.

I don’t think any photos can actually do it justice, I think you need to experience it for yourself. 

In order to take your flight, you’ll need to head to “base”, which is Niagara District Airport (around 15 minutes from the centre). We drove there in our own vehicle, but you can get a taxi. 

When you arrive, you’ll check in, and they’ll weigh you, and you’ll need to watch a safety video.

There’s tea and coffees available while you wait to “board” your helicopter! 

Then, it’ll be your turn and you’ll walk to the Helicopter, get strapped in, put on your ear phones and get ready for an INCREDIBLE experience. 

All in all we had a fantastic experience with National Helicopters, so I 100% recommend them.

It was important to me that the company we flew with had a good safety reputation, and they do! 

There are a bunch of companies that offer Helicopter rides over Niagara falls and it will be up to you to choose who to go with, but I can only recommend National Helicopters off my own experience.

Is a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls safe?

If you’re apprehensive about flying, I can see how you might feel that a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls would be unsafe.

But this isn’t some cheap, unregulated experience, the helicopters have safety standards and you are in good hands. Plus they won’t fly if the conditions are not good. So yes, it is safe. 

A fun safety stat for National Helicopters is that they’ve got an untarnished safety record since 1985.

How long is the Niagara helicopter tour?

A standard tour is around 7 minutes, but with National Helicopters , their standard is 20 minutes long, however, depending on the package you can opt for longer flights. For example, with National Helicopters, they do a private romantic tour (which includes some bubbles!), and you get an extra 5 minutes (you can also arrange a sunset tour, which I imagine is very magical.

So is it worth it?

YES. I think a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls is totally worth it.

There are LOTS of ways to see the falls, via the water (Maid of the Mist style), you can zip line over part of them, you can even go behind the falls, which I also recommend, and you can even get a hotel room with a view of the falls (I HIGHLY recommend the Marriott for this- we loved it). 

But, flying over the falls really gives you an exciting experience, and the falls are just so majestic, that you can only really appreciate the vastness and powerful nature of them from above. 

So whether you're visiting Niagara Falls for a special occasion, or you’re just ticking off that bucket list, I highly recommend you take a helicopter ride over Niagara falls!
