In fact, we actually traveled for two years on a budget of around $30 per person a day so it’s definitely doable.
And we didn't feel like we were missing out on too much.
Whether you’re looking for a short getaway or you’re planning a year-long backpacking trip, there are plenty of cheap ways to travel.
Planning your trip can often feel overwhelming especially if you’re looking to cut costs but it doesn’t have to be.
That’s where we come in, as we’ve got some fantastic tips to help you travel cheaper!

From working whilst you travel to finding free accommodation (yes, you heard right), there are so many ways for you to explore the world with limited means.
So if you’re wondering how to travel cheap then make sure you stick around…
The first thing to think about when planning a trip is your budget.
If you’re looking to keep your costs low then you’ll want to work out a daily budget for your travels.
This should include accommodation, meals, transport, and any activities that you plan to do.
You can either work this out as an individual or in a pair if you’re traveling as a couple.
Now, this doesn’t have to be super strict but it’s a good idea to have a rough ballpark figure.
Once you’ve got a cost in your head, it’s much easier to try and stick to it.
If you’re really strict then you can always note down what you spend, but that might take away from the enjoyment of your trip.
For this reason, I recommend working out an estimate instead.
So, for example, you might say ‘I want to travel to Bali and I’ve got a budget of $40-$60 per day’. That gives you some flexibility to splurge on certain days, and then make up for it another day by keeping your costs low.
On our South East Asia adventures, Cazzy actually tracked everything we spent in a little book (but you can do that digital too!), which we found very useful to stick to a budget, and when we were under budget on some days, we could use that money towards something special we wanted to do.
Once you’ve got an idea of what you can spend it’s easier to decide where you should go!
If you’ve got a flexible budget and you’re not bothered about your spending then the world’s your oyster.
However, if you’re looking for advice on how to travel cheaply then that’s probably not the case.
Luckily, there are so many incredible cheap places to visit in the world, including destinations in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America.
Now, Asia, Africa, and South America are often associated with traveling on a budget, but Europe? Well, there are plenty of cheap countries in Europe which you’ll be glad to know.
If this fascinating continent is on your mind, then some of the most budget-friendly countries include Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Montenegro, and Romania.
Although you’ll find some places in Asia, Africa, and South America to be more expensive than others, the majority of countries are very affordable with some exceptions of course.
It’s the likes of Canada, the United States, Australia, and the Nordic countries that you’ll want to try and avoid if you're looking to keep costs low.
The next thing to consider is how long you’re traveling for!
This will differ for everyone, as some people will only be able to travel for a few nights while others will travel for months at a time, especially if they work remotely.
The duration of your trip can have a big impact on the deals you’ll find, and the type of accommodation you should choose.
If you’re only staying somewhere for a couple of nights then there are some fantastic hostels and budget guest houses out there.
However, if you’re staying in one place for a relatively long time then you may want to go for an apartment/studio room. This way, you’ll be able to cook your own meals and save money!
Some vacation rental sites also offer discounts on long-term stays, so keep your eyes peeled for deals. This is especially the case if you’re looking on Airbnb or Booking.com.
Aside from accommodation, activities are often the most expensive part of traveling. This is generally the case for most destinations too!
The money you spend on tours and excursions will differ depending on where you visit, as some types of activities are more expensive.
For example, if you’re heading to Africa or Sri Lanka then you’re probably going to want to do a safari. It’s a bucket list activity that you don’t want to miss for sure, but you’ll have to fork out some cash.
Whereas you might find that other destinations like Vietnam, India, and Mexico offer cheaper tours, but there may be more things that you want to do. This in turn, will likely balance the cost out anyway.
To give yourself a good idea of the money you’ll need for activities, make a list of the tours and excursions that you’d like to do during your trip!
Although there are plenty of solo travelers out there that travel on a budget, you can often save a lot of money by traveling with a friend, partner, or in a group.
Doubling up saves money on almost all aspects of travel, whether that be transport, meals, or accommodation.
For starters, it’s actually cheaper almost everywhere to get a room for two people than it is to book two separate dorm room beds.
In places like Vietnam, cozy double rooms can be as cheap as $12, so once you’ve split that the cost comes down even further. Plus you’ll have your own private space and won’t need to share a dorm.
However, it’s not just accommodation that becomes cheap when you’re not traveling solo!
Transport is another thing that becomes much cheaper if you’re traveling with someone, especially if you’re looking to book taxis.
Many countries also offer private drivers for the day, where the price is split between the car. If you’re traveling in a group of four and the cost is $40 - you’ll literally be paying $10 each!
Speaking of taxis, it’s always best to avoid paying for them if you can. In some destinations, such as Bali they are extremely cheap so it’s not too much of a problem.
However, in other places taxis can leave a huge dent in your wallet, especially if you’re using them all the time.
Airports are the worst places for taxis as the prices are hugely inflated, and you’re likely to get hounded or ripped off (or both).
Sometimes it’s unavoidable as many airports ban all other forms of transfers, but usually, you can get away with pre-booking some sort of transport.
You have got another option though! Instead of using airport taxis, use a ride-hailing app such as Uber or Lyft. These will differ depending on the location, so do your research ahead of time.
Our go-to is Uber, but in Southeast Asia, Grab and Go Jek have become pretty dominant too! There’s also InDrive which we’ve recently found.
The other benefit to using a ride-hailing service is that you can add your exact location so it’s easy for the driver to follow. This also helps with language barriers!
Leading on from the last point, if you’re wanting to travel affordably then I recommend picking up a local sim card.
These will differ in every country that you visit so you’ll have to do some research but it will be worth it in the long run - trust me!
Not only can you use them to order ride-hailing apps, but you’ll have access to the internet wherever you go. This means you won’t have to rely on expensive data packages from your home country.
Having a local sim card has a ton of benefits including using Google Maps, working out exchange rates, using Google Translate, and accessing your bank account.
You’ll usually find plenty of sim cards available at the airport, but these are often the most expensive so try to avoid getting one here if you can.
Once you’ve reached your destination, you'll often find local sim cards in small stores and supermarkets where you can get a great deal.
You’ll just need to carry a small pin or sim-eject tool with you, so you can swap your sim card.

Another alternative is to get an eSim card, which is basically a virtual sim that gives you all the same benefits of using the internet in your chosen destination, but you don't need to go find a physical eSim.

If you’re wondering how to travel the world cheaply then your best bet is to work whilst you travel.
This is more for long-term travelers and backpackers, rather than people looking for a holiday. Let’s be honest, you’re not going to work on your two weeks of annual leave if you’ve got a full-time job!
Now, there are plenty of fantastic travel jobs out there but it’s important to find the right one for you.
If you’re looking for something long-term then you may be better off going for a digital nomad job. Some of the best options include freelance copywriting, teaching English online, and being a virtual assistant.
However, many people choose to work on the road so to say, and there are lots of options for this.
Whether it be bartending, seasonal jobs, or working at a hostel, there are plenty of ways to make money whilst you’re traveling.
Not only will you be able to offset your holiday costs, but you might even be able to make some cash along the way to prolong your trip!
If you’re looking to save money then make sure you shop around before booking! This goes for almost anything, so flights, accommodation, tours, transport, etc.
There are plenty of fantastic websites out there, and if you’ve got the time I’d recommend looking through a few of them to grab a bargain.
For accommodation, you’ve got the likes of Booking.com, Hostelworld, Airbnb, and Agoda. However, there are lots of incredible comparison sites that you can browse too and they sometimes offer cheaper prices.

When it comes to flights your best option is Skyscanner, although you’ve also got Kayak, Momonndo, and Expedia.
For transport, it will all depend on where you’re traveling to. 12Go Asia is often the most popular option in Southeast Asia for example and is known for its cheap prices.
If you’re heading elsewhere, then make use of BusBud, Omio, Flixbus, and Rail Europe.
Finally, for accommodation, you’ve got a couple of options.
The two websites I recommend for booking tours are Get Your Guide and Viator, although you can always check local tour operators too!
If you’re wondering how to get discounts on flights, then this is one of the best things you can do!
Using air miles is particularly common in the United States, and it’s essentially a way to get your flights for free or heavily discounted.
You simply apply for an airline credit card or a credit card that rewards you with air miles and then spend away.
Whether you’re looking to buy a new bathroom, invest in a new camera, or head to the local supermarket, you’ll want to make sure that these types of things are paid for on a credit card.
The more you spend, the more points you rack up and these are then converted into airline miles.
Just keep in mind that many airline credit cards require a monthly or yearly fee, and you’ll need to pay the amount in full each month.
If you’re not in a position to do that then don’t apply for one of these travel credit cards as the interest charges can be pretty high.

One of our top budget travel tips is to always eat where the locals eat!
Not only will you be treated to the best and most authentic food this way, but it’s also far cheaper no matter where in the world you go.
Generally, you’ll find that the touristy areas offer a variety of restaurants and many of these will be more in line with what you’d expect e.g. air conditioning and indoor seating.
However, the prices will be much higher in places like this. Luckily, you don’t need to skimp on quality if you go for the more local spots, as many of them offer incredible food.
To find the best local restaurants, you can always check the ‘cheap eats’ section on Tripadvisor, or simply look out for where all the locals are dining!
If you’re heading to countries in Asia or South America, then there will also be lots of street food on offer.
In countries like Cambodia, you can often find delicious meals for as little as $1 so your money will go a long way.
If you’re looking to travel the world with little money, then you’ll want to be careful where you decide to stay.
Accommodation is often one of the most expensive costs of traveling, and that’s the same no matter where you go.
In some Asian countries, you can find hotel rooms for as cheap as $12 and dorm beds are even cheaper! However, you should consider using self-contained accommodation!
You’ve got the option of an apartment, studio, cabin, etc, and they will all feature a private kitchenette where you can cook your own meals.
This will save you a lot of money during your travels, and if you’re staying for a prolonged period, you’ll also find some great deals on long-term rentals.

If you can’t afford to stay in accommodation like this or you’d prefer to meet other travelers along the way, then there’s another option.

Saving money for traveling isn’t easy and the last thing you want is for your hard-earned cash to just whittle away before your eyes.
Luckily, there are plenty of fantastic ways to save money during your holiday.
One of the best ways to make the most of your money is to invest in a city pass, and you’ll find lots of them out there!
This is especially the case if you’re wondering how to travel cheap in the USA, as many of the major cities offer a city pass. This includes New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas!
City passes allow you to save up to 55% off attractions, as you purchase them in advance and then you can use them to enter a variety of places.
You can generally purchase a pass that lasts between 1-7 days, and there are sometimes two options; an all-inclusive pass or an explorer pass. The latter only allows you to visit a couple of attractions but it’s cheaper!
Many cities across the world have these city passes, so make sure you check before you go.
There are plenty of ways to travel for cheap but this one is more tailored toward long-term travelers and backpackers.
There’s no denying that transport is expensive, and that’s especially the case if you’re flying between countries.
However, if you’re backpacking Southeast Asia, South America, or even the United States, there are plenty of opportunities for overland travel.
For example, many people choose to travel overland between Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam among others!
Whether it be by bus or train, traveling overland between countries will save you expensive airline tickets and hefty luggage fees.
Some of the longer journeys are often run overnight too so you’ll save money on accommodation costs. This is one of our top travel tips!
When booking these overland travel options, you’ll generally have the choice between tourist buses and local transport e.g the third-class train journeys in India.
The tourist options will naturally be more expensive, but they can be worth it in terms of comfort! Some of them will offer a bed, plug sockets, and meals.
Like with anything, just shop around first to find the cheapest deals.
For those on a long-term trip especially, this is one of best ways to travel as you'll save plenty of money.
Whether you’re traveling or you’re on holiday, the likelihood is that you’ll have to withdraw money from an ATM at some point.
ATM fees can be expensive, especially in popular Asian countries like Thailand so you’ll want to keep an eye on this.
Before you know it, you’ve spent $5 in fees for every transaction and that can soon add up!
To avoid these charges, you’ll want to apply for a reliable travel card and our two favorite options are Monzo and Revolut.
Both of these platforms offer a free account, and you’ll benefit from $240 of no-fee ATM withdrawals every month. There are also paid plans available, where you can increase your no-free withdrawals to $970 per month.

However, we’d actually recommend getting one of each and then you can take advantage of both withdrawal limits.
Aside from combating ATM fees; travel cards like Revolut have a lot to offer with fantastic currency conversion rates and other travel perks!
Now, this one isn’t for everyone as haggling is a difficult skill to master!
No matter where you travel, many people will try to rip you off simply because you’re a tourist. Unfortunately, that’s just the way things go and it’s something you’ll have to get used to.
This is usually more the case for souvenirs, tours, and taxis though, as accommodation is often a fixed price (phew).
The best way to get around this is by learning how to haggle!
Essentially, you just barter the price down to something you’re willing to pay.
There’s a catch to this one though!
You’ll only want to haggle in situations where it's suitable so markets for example, otherwise you’re at risk of offending someone.
To give you an idea of the haggling situation in the country you’re visiting, just do a bit of research before your trip.
You’ll often find other travelers offering tips on this, and they may suggest that vendors inflate their prices by ⅔ for tourists in the destination you’re visiting!
This way, you’ll be able to work out the rough price that you should be paying.
Cazzy actually enjoys haggling sometimes, and her biggest tip to start haggling is to start walking away when they quote a ridiculous price at a market stall. 99.99% they'll start walking after you and then you name your price!
If you’re a student and you’re wondering how to travel cheap, then you’re in luck!
You’ll often be entitled to fantastic discounts on transport, tours, car rentals, and even airline tickets if you’re a student, but you’ll need to have an ISIC Card.
ISIC stands for ‘International Student Identity Card’ and it’s recognized across the world.
Some of the awesome companies that you can use this card with include Get Your Guide, Emirates Airlines, Booking.com, and Avis Car Rental.
With some of these companies, you can get up to 35% off which is a huge discount!
If you’re not a student, then you’ve also got the option of the IYTC Card (International Youth Travel Card) which is available for anyone aged 30 or below!
Both cards range in price depending on where you’re from, but you’re generally looking to pay around $14 for one. The cards are valid for 12 months, and you’ll be entitled to a variety of cool benefits.

When you’re traveling cheaply, it’s important to take advantage of every free activity you come across!
Some of the best free things to do include visiting museums, relaxing in a park, wandering around markets, and searching for local street art.
If you’re an outdoorsy person, then you can always hit some of the area’s hiking trails.
Now, one of the best ways to explore a city is by a free walking tour. You’ll find plenty of cities that offer them, especially in Europe.
Some examples include Barcelona, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Paris. Free Tour is a website that offers a variety of free walking tours so check them out!
These tours usually last for around two hours and you’ll have an authorized guide, to explain the area’s history and take you to some of the most popular sites.

This isn’t something that people often think of when packing for their travels, but if you’re wanting to travel cheaply it’s another great way to save money.
If you’re on the road for a long time then it’s inevitable that you’re going to have to wash your clothes at some point.
If you’re traveling through cheap countries then you’ll find plenty of local laundry services, and many towns and cities often have laundromats.
However, if you’re looking to keep the costs down then I recommend carrying a laundry bar with you!
You won’t be able to use it for everything, but it’s super handy to have if you need to wash underwear, swimming costumes/trunks, and delicates.
It means you won’t have to pay for a whole wash when you’ve only got a certain amount of clothes that you need to clean!
For a double whammy, make sure you also purchase a laundry soap bar that’s effective in removing stains. A good example of this is the Vanish Stain Remover Bar, and both of them will take up little room in your bag!
Even the little things can add up to cheaper travels, and one of these is purchasing a filtered water bottle before your trip.
Many of the places we visit don’t have ‘safe’ water or water that can cause you to be sick, because it’s so different from the water that we drink at home.
For this reason, many health websites suggest that you should avoid drinking tap water while abroad in certain countries.
Not being able to fill up your water bottle whenever you’d like can get expensive, as you’ll have to purchase lots of water bottles every day.
However, purchasing a filtered water bottle means you won’t need to do this, as you can fill up your bottle at a tap, and then the bottle will effectively filter the water and make it safe to drink!
Not only will this save you money along the way, but they’re so much better for the environment.
Having a filtered water bottle will also reduce your single-use plastics which is great as we’re always looking for ways to limit our impact on the world!
If you’re looking for ways to save money on flights then I’d recommend investing in a VPN, which stands for a ‘Virtual Private Network’.
Many people use them to change their location so they can watch TV shows that are only available in other countries, but a VPN has plenty of other uses.
A VPN essentially works by encrypting communications so you’ll have an anonymous IP address. So, how does this help you ask?
Well, some countries are naturally cheaper to book flights from so you just need to adjust your location to one of these. That way, you’ll get some fantastic deals when it comes to flight prices.
Another great way to find cheap flights is to search for them through an incognito window!
Now, these methods don’t just apply to flights. In fact, a VPN or incognito window can be used to get deals on a variety of things. This includes accommodation, transport, and tours!
Using an incognito window is completely free, but VPN services generally cost between $2-8 a month. We currently use Surfshark, and have had a great experience so far.
There’s no denying that alcohol can be expensive in some countries. If you’re a die-hard partygoer then it can leave a real dent in your wallet!
In destinations like Bali, a lot of the alcohol is imported so the price tags aren’t pretty. However, they’ve got a local beer called Bintang which is a huge hit with travelers.
If you’re planning to drink the local stuff, then just make sure you think about the quality of the drink!
Bottled local beers and some other beverages are fine, but avoid any unique concoctions if you’re unaware of what’s in them.
The other thing to be aware of is how the drinks are made! If they’re made with local water which is unsafe to drink, then you’re in for more than just a hangover…
Another way to save money on alcohol abroad is by prioritizing ‘Happy Hour’ as well as drinking at home first - simple tricks, but they can save you a lot of money!
Some countries are naturally much more expensive than others, and for these types of places, we love to road trip through the destination as it saves you a lot of money in the long run.
This is especially the case if you hire or convert a campervan as you’ll save tons of money on accommodation!
Some hire companies even offer camper relocation deals, where you drop off the vehicle in another location. With deals like this, you can save up to 50% off your camper hire!
An example of this is Alaska! This U.S. state is undeniably one of the best places to visit in the world but it’s expensive, especially when it comes to accommodation.
However, there are plenty of fantastic campgrounds in Alaska and you can even free camp, so you won’t need to pay for anything at all. However, your camper will need to have an off-grid system.
Some of the destinations we’ve road-tripped to save money include Norway, Iceland, Scotland, and Ireland.
In fact, while driving around the world we’ve visited plenty of incredible places including Utah, Mexico, and Colombia.
One of the best things about going on a trip is the activities you’ll get to do along the way, and the attractions you’ll see.
If you’re heading to a city then it’s likely that you’ll be overwhelmed with tours and excursions, and we find that it’s a good idea to make a list of your ‘must-do things’.
Many destinations will have plenty of tour operators available where you can book tours, and compare prices. However, I recommend taking a look online too.
You’ll find that platforms like Get Your Guide and Viator often have a variety of offers on which are a great way to save money!
This goes for city sightseeing tours, theme park entrance tickets, and other activities like cooking classes.
By taking a look at these online platforms as well as local tour operators, you’ll get to see which ones offer better value for money.
The great thing about booking online is that you’ll be able to read all the reviews and look at the photographs to get a better idea of what you’re booking!

There are plenty of ways to do this, but taking advantage of free accommodation is one of the best and most effective ways to save money!
One of the most popular ways to do this is by working at a hostel, but there are plenty of other options too.
This includes house sitting where you’ll look after someone's property whilst they’re away, or Couchsurfing where you can stay on someone's ‘couch’ for free.

The latter of which we used in Santiago, where we ended up meeting the most amazing couple. In fact, we are still friends with them today, even though we met only for a few days all the way back in 2016.
Another great way to get free accommodation is by volunteering or by doing a work exchange, where you’ll participate in a program or help the homeowners with daily tasks.
With this, just make sure you’re using a trusted website like WOOF or Worldpackers.
There are some horror stories out there about ‘volunteer experiences’ as people have turned up to volunteer or do a work exchange and it’s not been up to standard!
If you’re looking to save money whilst traveling then there are a couple of apps that you need to download!
Firstly, some accommodation websites offer in-app discounts and these are great to have if you want to save some cash. Some of the best apps to download for this include Booking.com, Hostelworld, and Expedia!
Kayak is another great app to have as it features price alerts for accommodation. This means you can save up for a hotel you like, and you’ll be alerted if the price drops.
When it comes to transport, some of the apps you’ll want to download include Skyscanner, Uber, and Busbud. This way, you can get some great deals on transport and you’ll have your booking to hand at all times.
Depending on where you’re living, you can also download apps such as Groupon and Wowcher which often have a variety of cheap offers.

Saving money whilst traveling is a skill in itself, and as you travel more you’ll find more and more ways to keep your hard-earned cash.
One of the best ways to cut your costs is to choose where you stay carefully. We’ve already looked at which destination to travel to, but now you’ll want to think about which area to stay in.

You can often find accommodation for half the price if you take this approach, and your bank account will thank you in the long run!
Not only that but if you manage to save money on where you’re staying, then you’ll have more to spend on activities, excursions, and food of course.
Travel insurance is arguably one of the most important things to purchase when you’re going on a trip, and it’s not something you want to skimp out on.
Many people either choose not to buy it, or they’ll find the cheapest deal they can and that’s just something that I don’t recommend.
If you’re a keen traveler then it’s likely that you’ll need to use your insurance at some point.
The one thing I’ll say with travel insurance is to always read the fine print!
There’s nothing worse than getting sick abroad, your flight getting canceled, or losing a valuable item, and then finding out that your insurance just won’t cover it.
You’ll then have to fork out for all of this and your travel money is going to take a huge hit!
Unfortunately, many providers will have ‘loopholes’ in their insurance policies and you’ll want to double-check this to make sure that yours doesn’t.
