Hvammsvik Hot Springs Review

On our 5 week road trip around Iceland, we visited A LOT of hot springs, well over 20!

And they varied in terms of quality, whether they were free or not, and well, how hot they were! ;)

But if I had to round up my favourite “paid” hot springs, then the one that TOPS my list is Hvammsvik Hot Springs.

A relatively new geothermal retreat that promises a mix of wild nature and cozy warmth. But does it live up to the hype? And more importantly, is it worth your time (and money)?

Let’s dive in…

About Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Tucked away in the scenic Hvalfjörður fjord (say that five times fast), Hvammsvik Hot Springs is about a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik. Unlike the super-touristy Blue Lagoon (which is still pretty awesome, by the way!), this place offers a much more natural experience—think rustic charm, stunning fjord views, and a vibe that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a hidden paradise.

The hot springs are actually part of a private estate, and the owners have done an incredible job of keeping the space tranquil and immersive.

The pools blend right into the landscape, and you even get direct access to the ocean for an icy plunge if you're feeling brave.

The Experience

From the moment you step in, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a peaceful Nordic retreat. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Multiple natural pools with varying temperatures. Some are cozy and warm, others are just right for a refreshing dip.
  • A wild, untouched atmosphere—no artificial blue waters or spa-like vibes here, just you, the rocks, and the fjord.
  • Ocean access! Yes, you can run from the steaming hot springs straight into the freezing North Atlantic. It’s a shock to the system, but in the best way.
  • A charming little bar serving local beers, wine, and snacks—because what’s better than a hot soak with a drink in hand?
  • Minimal crowds compared to the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, meaning a much more peaceful experience.

The Atlas Challenge

Feeling strong? Then, at your own risk, you can partake in a unique activity to win prizes!

There are 3 stones of different weight:
“The Lightweight” – 75kg
“The Standard” – 120kg
“The King” – 170kg

To successfully complete the challenge you need to lift a stone up on your shoulder and keep it there for 5 seconds.

It looks easier than it seems…

You’ll need to post a video recording to verify a successful lift and to reclaim your reward, post the video on Instagram, tag @hvammsvik and use the following hashtags:

#hvammsvik , #hvammsvikAtlaschallenge and #hvammsvikhotsprings.

I bet you’re thinking….what are the prizes!?

“The Lightweight” – a free drink of your choice at the bar
“The Standard” – a free admission for two at Hvammsvík Hot Springs and two drinks of choice
“The King” – free admission to Hvammsvík Hot Springs for a year

So I mean, if you think you can actually do it, then the prizes aren’t bad…

Did we try? Well, I TRIED to convince Brad….but no! Haha

Pros & Cons of Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Like everything in life, Hvammsvik isn’t perfect—so here’s a quick breakdown of what’s awesome and what’s meh.

Pros:

✔️ Stunning natural setting—one of the most beautiful hot springs in Iceland.
✔️ Feels exclusive and off-the-beaten-path.
✔️ Ocean access for a fun cold-plunge experience.
✔️ Not overly crowded, so it feels intimate and relaxing.
✔️ Great drinks and snacks available on-site.

Cons:

❌ Pricey compared to other natural hot springs.
❌ Can be tricky to get to without a car (BUT you can get prearranged shuttles)
❌ Weather-dependent—on a stormy day, it might not be as enjoyable.

How It Compares to Other Icelandic Hot Springs

So how does Hvammsvik stack up against Iceland’s other famous hot spots?

  • Vs. Blue Lagoon – Less crowded, more natural, but without the spa-like luxuries. If you want a wilderness escape, Hvammsvik wins. If you want fancy face masks and Instagram-famous blue water, Blue Lagoon takes the crown.
  • Vs. Sky Lagoon – Sky Lagoon has a more chic vibe with its infinity pool and sauna ritual. Hvammsvik is all about that raw, untouched nature.
  • Vs. Secret Lagoon – Both are great for a low-key experience, but Hvammsvik offers more pools and better scenery.

Who Should Visit?

We LOVE a swim up bar!

Hvammsvik is perfect for:
✔️ Nature lovers who want a more rugged, scenic soak.
✔️ Travelers who like off-the-beaten-path experiences.
✔️ Couples looking for a romantic, quiet retreat.
✔️ People who enjoy hot-and-cold therapy (aka running between a steaming pool and freezing ocean like a Viking). We LOVE it!

You might want to skip it if:
❌ You’re on a tight budget—it’s not the cheapest option out there.
❌ You prefer a full-service spa experience with massages and treatments.
❌ You don’t have a car—getting there via public transport isn’t really an option.

Final Verdict – Is It Worth Visiting?

Short answer? Yes!
Long answer? If you love natural hot springs, stunning fjord views, and a bit of adventure, Hvammsvik is totally worth it. It’s a beautiful, peaceful escape from the more touristy hot springs in Iceland, and the ocean access makes it a one-of-a-kind experience.

That said, if you’re all about luxury and spa treatments, you might prefer Sky Lagoon or Blue Lagoon.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (if you love nature) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (if you prefer spa-style hot springs)

But overall, I absolutely think you should put this hot spring on your Iceland bucket list!

What is the best way to get to Hvammisvik Hot Springs?

To reach Hvammsvík Hot Springs from London, you'll need to travel to Reykjavík, Iceland, and then proceed to the hot springs located approximately 45 minutes away from the city center.

  • By Car: Renting a car provides flexibility. From Reykjavík, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) northbound. Before reaching the Hvalfjörður Tunnel, turn right onto Route 47. Continue for about 20 kilometers until you see the Hvammsvík sign on the left. The drive offers scenic views of the Hvalfjörður fjord and takes approximately 45 minutes.
  • By Organized Transfer: Hvammsvík Hot Springs offers scheduled bus transfers from Reykjavík. These transfers depart at specific times and include round-trip transportation and admission to the hot springs. It's advisable to book in advance to secure your spot.
  • By Private Taxi: For a more personalized experience, private taxi services can be arranged. This option offers direct transportation from your accommodation in Reykjavík to the hot springs and back.
  • Tips for Visiting

Go early or late in the day for the best experience (fewer people, better lighting).
Bring a towel and flip-flops—they’re not included in the basic entrance fee.
Try the ocean plunge (it’s cold, but you won’t regret it).
Book in advance to secure a spot, especially in peak season.
Check the weather—while the pools are warm, strong winds and rain can make it less enjoyable.

Hvammsvik Hot Springs is one of Iceland’s hidden gems and definitely worth checking out if you want a more natural, peaceful soaking experience. Whether you’re looking for a place to unwind after a day of exploring or just want to embrace the Icelandic way of life (hot water, cold ocean, repeat), this spot has a lot to offer.

So, would you visit Hvammsvik? If you’ve already been, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
