Iceland is famous for its stunning landscapes, geothermal activity, and, of course, its world-renowned hot springs.
When Brad and I roadtripped the entire country over a 5 week period, we soaked in A LOT of hot springs (over 25), and one of those was Myvatn Nature Baths.
While the Blue Lagoon is often the go-to choice for many travelers, there’s another hidden gem in North Iceland that offers a more tranquil and authentic experience.
If you’re wondering whether it’s worth visiting, this detailed review will help you decide...
Located near Lake Mývatn in North Iceland, Mývatn Nature Baths is a geothermal spa that provides visitors with an opportunity to soak in mineral-rich waters while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanic landscapes.
It’s often referred to as the “Blue Lagoon of the North”, but unlike its famous counterpart, it offers a quieter and more intimate experience.
The baths are heated naturally by underground volcanic activity, making them a unique and relaxing stop on the Diamond Circle road trip.
One of the biggest selling points of Mývatn Nature Baths is the lack of crowds compared to the Blue Lagoon.
While the Blue Lagoon often requires booking weeks (or even months) in advance, Mývatn Nature Baths usually have same-day availability.
The baths are spacious, and even during peak hours, you won’t feel overwhelmed by other visitors.
But this is important to note, that the Myvatn baths are smaller than the Blue Lagoon, so you may find you need less time there, and it’s worth nothing that because they are smaller, when it DOES get super busy, it can be harder to find a quiet area to relax.
Whereas, because the Blue Lagoon is very big, even when it’s crowded, you can often find a corner with fewer people around you.
Situated in a volcanic landscape, the views from the baths are absolutely stunning.
Imagine soaking in warm, milky-blue water while gazing at lava fields, distant mountains, and steaming fumaroles.
The contrast between the cool Arctic air and the steaming waters creates a magical atmosphere, especially during sunrise or sunset.
The geothermal waters in Mývatn Nature Baths come from hot underground springs, with temperatures ranging between 36-40°C (96-104°F).
These waters contain silica, sulfur, and other minerals, which are known to be great for the skin. Unlike chlorinated pools, the high mineral content naturally keeps the water clean.
Bonus: The sulfur content in the water helps with respiratory issues and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
However, it does have a mild sulfuric smell, similar to boiled eggs. It’s probably the strongest smelling of the hot springs I visited in Iceland, and the smell did take its toll on Brad (lol), so just be wary of that!
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative, Mývatn Nature Baths are more affordable than many other paid hot springs in Iceland, such as the Blue Lagoon, Sky Lagoon and Hvammisvik Hot Springs.
Mývatn Nature Baths is ideally located on Iceland’s Diamond Circle, which includes must-visit sights like:
